The Incas' Sacred Valley

Located just one hour by car from the city of Cusco, the Urubamba Valley or Sacred Valley of the Incas is one of the areas most visited by tourists. Here you will find numerous native Andean communities, picturesque towns, bucolic landscapes, important archaeological sites..

Due to the richness and fertility of its lands, it was the main source of food, since the time of the Incas, for the city of Cusco. He is currently famous for being a producer of the largest corn cobs in the world. The valley is flanked by imposing peaks of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, many snowfalls, and its skirts dominated by impressive terraces, which are currently in full use.

The Sacred Valley is comprised between the towns of Písac and Ollantaytambo, has wonderful landscapes, where its inhabitants, natives of the Quechua ethnic group, retain many customs, ancestral rites and various expressions of art that remain as a living culture. In the Sacred Valley, beautiful colonial towns are disseminated that were created as reductions of Indians, and today show their miscegenation in architecture, art and living culture. There are Chinchero and its weavers, Písac and its craft fair, Urubamba and its cosmopolitanism and Ollantaytambo, with its fortress and its live Inca people.

It is the area where you can appreciate and magnify the high Inca technological development that they achieved in agriculture through "andenería" systems of irrigated terraces on the slopes of the mountains, where they domesticated a large number of plants, highlighting the first genetic laboratory Moray prehispanic.

Its mild temperate climate and its particular geography make it an ideal place for outdoor sports, excellent scenarios for rafting, mountain biking, paragliding, trekking and bird watching.

In the Sacred Valley area there are accommodation alternatives, from luxury hotels in the countryside and cheap hotels in the villages, they have the advantage of having a lower height (1000 meters) compared to the city of Cusco and are located within beautiful landscapes of the countryside. In Ollantaytambo there is a train station to Machupicchu.
